Our Story

ArtSpain Guide was created out of a simple observation: while Spain boasts some of Europe's finest contemporary art institutions, practical and trustworthy visitor information in English was surprisingly hard to find. Too many travelers were arriving at museums without knowing about free entry hours, the best times to avoid crowds, or the neighborhood gems just around the corner.

We set out to change that. Our team of art writers, cultural journalists, and regular museum-goers puts together in-depth guides that go beyond the basics. We visit every museum we write about, often multiple times across different seasons, to ensure our recommendations reflect reality rather than press releases.

Our focus is on contemporary art because we believe it speaks to the present moment in ways that traditional collections cannot. Spain's contemporary art scene is vibrant, diverse, and constantly evolving, from major institutions like the Guggenheim Bilbao to independent galleries in Barcelona's Born district. We aim to capture that energy in everything we publish.

Our Editorial Values

Every guide we publish reflects these core principles that shape our approach to covering Spain's art scene.

1

First-Hand Experience

We visit every museum and gallery we recommend. Our guides are based on personal experiences, not aggregated reviews or secondhand information. If we have not been there, we do not write about it.

2

Practical Focus

Art appreciation is wonderful, but you also need to know about ticket prices, opening hours, and where to find a decent lunch nearby. We balance cultural depth with genuinely useful visitor information.

3

Regular Updates

Museums change their exhibitions, adjust their hours, and update their pricing. We review and update our guides regularly to ensure the information you find here is current and reliable.

4

Independent Perspective

We are not affiliated with any museum, tourism board, or ticketing platform. Our recommendations are based solely on the quality of the experience each institution offers.

5

Accessible Language

Contemporary art can feel intimidating, and we believe it should not. Our writing aims to be engaging and informative without jargon, welcoming both seasoned art lovers and curious first-time visitors.

6

Cultural Context

Art does not exist in a vacuum. We connect the works and institutions to their historical, social, and geographic context so you understand not just what you are seeing but why it matters.

What We Cover

Our primary focus is contemporary art museums and galleries across Spain. This includes major national institutions, regional museums, and noteworthy private galleries. While we currently feature in-depth guides to three of Spain's most important contemporary art destinations, we are actively working on additional guides covering:

  • Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, completing the Golden Triangle of Art
  • Fundacio Joan Miro in Barcelona, one of the largest single-artist museums in the world
  • MUSAC in Leon, an award-winning museum dedicated to 21st-century art
  • The Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM) in Valencia
  • Emerging gallery districts in cities like Malaga, Seville, and San Sebastian

If you have a suggestion for a museum or gallery we should cover, we would love to hear from you. Visit our contact page to get in touch with the editorial team.
